Region of Western Greece Promotes Green Living Areas Mission at SMACITE Workshop

On Thursday 23rd November 2023 the first national workshop of the SMACITE project took place at the premises of the University of Patras, in Patras, Greece. The workshop under the title: “Cities and communities ready for the future: Smart growth through new skills for Smart Cities engineers and technicians” was co-organized by University of Patras and Olympic Training and Consulting, partners in the SMACITE project.

At the workshop, the Region of Western Greece emerged as a frontrunner in promoting sustainable living. Ms. Aggeliki Kostopoulou, representing the Region, showcased the pivotal role played by the area in advancing the mission of Green Living Areas within the Interreg Euro-MED Programme. Specifically, she highlighted the Community4LivingAreas Project, where the Region is a dedicated project partner.

The Community4LivingAreas Project is a key initiative of the Region of Western Greece’s commitment to sustainable development. The Community4Living Areas Project, a cornerstone of this commitment, underscores the Region’s active participation and collaboration within the EuroMED Programme, aiming to tackle environmental challenges and creating a more sustainable future for its citizens, and enhance sustainable living practices across the Mediterranean region.

During the workshop the following presentations took place:

  • The SMACITE Erasmus+ project (University of Patras).
  • Metacities: Using digital twins for creating Smart Cities (University of Peloponnese).
  • Community4LivingAreas: Actions to promote green living spaces for effective cooperation in the Mediterranean region (Region of Western Greece).
  • Smart City applications in the Municipality of Kalamata: Development and installation of interactive multimedia information systems for citizens & visitors (Municipality of Kalamata).
  • Initiatives of the Municipality of Trikala for the creation of Smart Cities (Municipality of Trikala).
  • The HEI-OASIS project and skills matching for the up/reskilling of Smart Cities technicians and Enginners (University of Peloponnese).

The workshop provided a significant platform to showcase the Region’s initiatives, emphasizing its dedication to creating a more environmentally conscious and sustainable future.
